What role can family history play in understanding global historical currents and events? Julia Laite, Professor of Modern History at Birkbeck, University of London, examines her own family history and the troubled history of settler colonialism in Newfoundland, Canada, during this public lecture open to all. After the lecture, Historieverkstad Malmö (History Workshop Malmö) will lead a discussion about the strengths and pitfalls of tracing family history through turbulent times.

Julia Laite is the author of the critically acclaimed The Disappearance of Lydia Harvey (Profile, 2021), which won the Crime Writer’s Association Gold Dagger for Non-Fiction and the Bert Roth Award for Labour History. Her new project examines her own family history and the troubled history of settler colonialism in Newfoundland.
